Streamlining the Rescue Dog Intake Process: A GIS Application for MoKan Border Collie Rescue
Fall 2020
Abstract:
According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) an estimated 3.3 million dogs enter shelters and rescue groups annually (2019). These organizations spend a total of about $3 billion a year managing their operations and getting dogs into homes (The Humane Society of the United States, 2019). For this project, I will be working with a dog rescue headquartered in Columbia, Missouri, to create a GIS application that will streamline the dog intake process. There are many geospatial components of the intake process that this application will address, such as locations of dogs who need rescue, locations of available fosters and volunteers, and dog transport arrangements and paths.
