if no one records it is a site-specific acoustic sculpture developed through temporary pop up installations and listening events at Spruce Gulch Wildlife and Research Reserve. A perch is attached to the front of a surveillance camera housing, inviting woodpeckers to drum on the sculpture. A contact microphone inside the camera housing captures the vibrations of their drumming and transmits them to the attached speaker, which broadcasts the sound into the surrounding environment. Woodpeckers seek out resonant surfaces, such as hollow logs and gutters, to communicate territorial claims and attract mates. By artificially amplifying these signals, the sculpture potentially extends the bird’s territorial presence and alters how other animals perceive and respond to its claims. Here, resonance becomes a way to consider ecological relationships as exchanges in which distinct forms of agency encounter and transform one another. By bringing woodpecker communication into contact with surveillance infrastructure, the sculpture explores how relationships of mutual influence complicate the distinction between exercising control and being subject to it.
